Quality Standard IV: Principals Demonstrate Human Resource Leadership

ELEMENT A: Professional Development/Learning
Communities
Principals ensure that the school is a professional learning
community that provides opportunities for collaboration, fosters teacher learning and develops teacher leaders in a manner that is consistent with local structures, contracts, policies and strategic plans.

As instructional leader, I meet with grade level teams weekly to discuss and analyze data, plan for upcoming lessons and events, and assess needs for future professional development.  These meetings have led to focused professional development days throughout the year.

ELEMENT B: Recruiting, Hiring, Placing, Mentoring, and Dismissal of Staff
Principals establish and effectively manage processes and systems that ensure a knowledgeable, high-quality, high-performing staff.

While MES is fortunate to have low teacher turnover, we did have two positions become available for the 2014-2015 school year.  Several candidates were interviewed by a team of teachers and myself, and hiring decisions were made as a team.  We specifically looked for candidates that demonstrate a passionate commitment to education, have some knowledge of the curricula and assessments we utilize, and are willing to be a collaborative teammate.  We used a set of questions prepared by district administration this year, but creating a more detailed, comprehensive question list is a goal for next year's hiring.

ELEMENT C: Teacher and Staff Evaluation
Principals evaluate staff performance using the district’s educator evaluation system in order to ensure that teachers and staff are evaluated in a fair and equitable manner with a focus on improving teacher and staff performance and, thus, student achievement.

YSD-1 began implementation of SB191 and the new Educator Effectiveness procedures during the 2013-2014 school year.  The attached reflection on those practices was an assignment for the Supervision and Evaluation course I took through Adams State in the fall.
